Laser Vision Correction; LASIK and iLASIK

Lasik eye surgery blue eyeThe Laser Eyecare Center at Cockrell Eyecare is proud to offer the latest advancement in LASIK technology, iLASIK. The “i” in iLASIK stands for IntraLase which is a completely blade-free approach to LASIK vision correction. With iLASIK, a corneal flap is made using an ultra-fast, IntraLase femtosecond laser. Then an excimer laser is used to correct the vision to the patient’s unique specifications through a technology called iDesign CustomVue Wavefront-guided LASIK. This is a truly custom procedure based on the patient’s unique prescription and vision dynamics. Traditional LASIK uses a handheld device called a microkeratome to create the initial corneal flap, and uses the patients glasses prescription to determine the correction but with iLASIK, the procedure is a complete blade-free full laser procedure with a more customized visual correction.

The IntraLase Difference

The accuracy of the IntraLase is measured on a micron-level. This means our surgeons have more control during the procedure and have the ability to completely tailor the size, shape, and depth of the corneal flap based on the patient’s individual eyes. This level of customization provides excellent outcomes and the possibility for greater than 20/20 vision in the months following the procedure. The IntraLase Method takes approximately 15-30 seconds per eye and a total of 10 minutes for the entire LASIK procedure. IntraLase provides the most sophisticated and accurate technology for corneal flap creation available today. Our LASIK surgeon has selected the latest generation of IntraLase because it is safe, proven, and uniquely precise. Over 20 million procedures have been performed safely and effectively using IntraLase. In fact, iLASIK has been proven so effective, that it has been approved by the U.S. Department of Defense for use on front line combat personnel.

Traditional LASIK vs. iDesign CustomVue Wavefront-guided iLASIK

Traditional LASIK has been performed since May 1996. Over the years this technology has been fine-tuned and improved to further customize a patient’s vision correction to allow for, in some cases, better than 20/20 vision. With traditional LASIK, we take the patient’s most current glasses prescription and the VISX Star S4-IR excimer laser and use it to sculpt that prescription on the surface of the cornea. The limit of the customization in traditional LASIK is the glasses prescription itself. Conversely, iDesign's CustomVue Wavefront-guided procedure is now considered the gold standard of LASIK technology by allowing for not only the treatment of an individual's glasses prescription but also what is known as high order aberrations.

Wavefront technology maps out a 3D image of the patient’s eye from over 1,000 points of light, pinpointing areas of your eye that need a little more or a little less attention from the laser. This 3D laser provides measurements that are over 25 times more precise than what glasses, contact lenses or traditional LASIK can provide. Treatments based on these extremely refined measurements generally produce vision that is crisper and clearer than traditional LASIK. With iDesign CustomVue Wavefront-guided procedures, patients have the potential of seeing even better than with their glasses or contact lenses. It is not uncommon for iDesign CustomVue Wavefront-guided patients to see 20/15 after surgery.

iLASIK procedures at our office are performed by Dr. Ryan Conley, central and eastern Oklahoma’s leading corneal specialist.

If you are interested in exploring your refractive surgery options, we offer complimentary LASIK screenings. Our doctors will determine if LASIK is the best option for you and offer alternative refractive surgery solutions if necessary. We also offer CareCredit to make LASIK an affordable option.
